Can existing OpenNap clients be used?
Yes. naptify-server follows the OpenNap protocol, so existing clients such as Utatane can connect without any changes.
Can I migrate from FaceNap?
Yes. FaceNap settings, registered users, bans, and more can be imported. The steps are in the manual.
What are the system requirements?
It currently supports Windows 10 and 11 (x64, ARM64, x86) and Linux (x86_64, ARM64, glibc 2.17 or later). Support for macOS is planned.
Is a host name required?
It is not required, but we recommend it. The IP address of a home internet connection can change. With a dynamic DNS host name, users do not need to change the server address when it does.
What if connections from outside fail?
First, run External port check under Connection settings in the admin page. Then check port forwarding, the firewall settings, and whether the host name matches the IP address, in that order.
Can the admin page be opened from outside?
By default, it can be opened only from the PC running the server. To open it from outside, set Access scope to External access under Management access in Operation, require administrator login, and set a user name and password for the admin page. There is also “LAN only”, which allows only PCs on the same LAN.
How much load does it put on the PC?
It depends on the number of users and shared files. You can check CPU and memory usage in the admin page at any time.
What is the difference between Link and Guild?
Link is a distributed setup run by a single operator, with registered users and other data synchronized across all servers. Guild is cooperation between servers run by different operators; registered users and rules are not shared.
Can I use Guild while linked with FaceNap or SlavaNap?
No. While even one FaceNap or SlavaNap server is in the group of linked servers (the link cluster), no server in the cluster can use Guild. FaceNap and SlavaNap cannot tell guild users apart, so they cannot keep guild users from reaching unrelated servers. Guild becomes available again once the links with FaceNap and SlavaNap are removed.
Does it work with D-DNS.JP?
Yes. From the naptify-server admin page you can create a D-DNS.JP account, get a subdomain (host name), and have the IP address updated automatically. Because naptify-server updates the IP address itself, no update tool such as DiCE is needed.
Is the source code public?
The source code of naptify-server is not public. The specification of the protocol extension for server-to-server cooperation (Naptify Guild Protocol) is public.
Does it cost anything?
naptify-server is free to use. Dynamic DNS services and domains may cost money depending on the service and plan.
What is an IP address?
A number that identifies a device on a network. There are global IP addresses used on the internet and local IP addresses used only inside a home or office LAN. To publish naptify-server, connections from outside arrive at the global IP address and the router forwards them to the PC in the LAN.
What is a port?
A number that identifies which program on a PC a connection is for. By default, naptify-server listens for clients on port 8888 (and on redirect port 8875 if you use redirect). To accept connections from outside, these ports must be allowed through the router and firewall (port forwarding).
Could it be used to share illegal files?
naptify-server is a file-sharing server for the OpenNap protocol and is not intended for copyright infringement. Please do not share illegal files. Server operators are asked to use bans, blocked filenames, terms acceptance, and other features to deal with illegal sharing.
Does it work on a slow connection?
Yes. Files are transferred directly between users and do not pass through the server. The server handles only logins, searches, chat, and similar traffic. With many users, however, search responses may become slower.
Can I connect to my own server from the same PC?
Yes. The per-IP connection cap does not apply to connections from this PC or the LAN. If you cannot connect by host name from inside the same LAN, enter the local IP address of the server PC instead.
